Natural Homemade Makeup Remover

Do you ever sleep with your makeup on because you’re too tired to bother taking it off? I’ve been tempted to do this many nights because it was such a chore to take it off! I used to scrub and scrub my face with soap to get if off….ouch! Soap is so harsh on the skin and the dryness it caused just made my skin worse, making me put more makeup on, a vicious cycle!

This was before I discovered how fantastic oil is as a homemade makeup remover. At first, I was reluctant to try oil because I didn’t think it would remove it all and I thought the oil would clog my pores. But, I finally gave this homemade makeup remover a try and it works amazingly well to remove makeup! There’s no need to scrub like crazy to get it off because the oil gently wipes it off on to your wash cloth.

For this homemade makeup remover, all you need is one ingredient, olive oil (or jojoba oil). Olive oil can be used in place of soap or other makeup removers and it is better because it is hydrating!

Why Washing with soap is Damaging to the Skin

Washing your face with oil is great because dirt and impurities dissolve naturally without using harsh chemicals or stripping your skin’s protective layer, the acid mantle. Using any soaps or chemicals to wash your face can destroy the delicate pH balance and the acid mantle.

Why the Oil Method is the Best Homemade Makeup Remover for Your Skin

Oil is moisturizing, has healthy fats, and fantastic nutrients such as, vitamins E and K.

Also, many believe the antioxidants in olive oil are anti-aging helping to fight free radicals which cause premature aging of the skin. Since olive doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils and instead aids in hydrating your skin, this also helps prevent and reduce wrinkles.

Olive oil won’t clog your pores, is very gentle and soothing.

If you’re wondering what type of makeup you can remove with olive oil, it will work easily to remove any type, including: foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow. My mascara has never come off easier than with using oil!

Other Oils You could Use Instead of Olive Oil

For this homemade makeup remover, you can use any oil you prefer. I typically use either olive oil or jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is especially great for those concerned with skin breakouts because it is non-comedogenic. Coconut oil will also work great.

How to Use Olive Oil to Remove Your Makeup:

1. Wash your hands and pour about 1/2 of a teaspoon of olive oil into one hand.
2. Gently massage the oil onto your face and continue massaging for about two minutes. Massaging for a few minutes ensures that your skin is fully saturated with the oil, which makes the makeup extremely easy to remove.
3. Use a warm damp wash cloth to gentle wipe your face and remove the oil.

Have you tried using natural oil as a homemade makeup remover?

Olive Oil nor Coconut Oil are non-comedogenic. Oil, butters, etc. are rated by using various sources including the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology. The products are given a rating from 0-5, with 0 being non-comedogenic for the vast majority of the population. Olive Oil has a rating of 2 while coconut oil has a rating of 4. For reference I have include the scale as follows: 0 – Will Not Clog Pores, 1 – Low, 2 – Moderately Low
3 – Moderate, 4 – Fairly High, 5 – High. My source for this information is attached below however this information is readily available in all dermatology journals and of course on the internet.

I would use either hempseed oil or jojoba oil if you have acne prone skin. Coconut oil can clog pores in some.

I have very sensitive eyes – so the ONLY thing I can use to remove my eye makeup is the Green Tea Cleanser from made from earth….everything else makes my eyes water. It also is a great cleanser for the mornings! Def recommend if your eyes are sensitive to soap since this is not soap.

I have very fair, sensitive, dry skin (and maybe the beginnings of rosacea). I started wearing less foundation and using the Somaluxe Face Cleanser to wash off my foundation. Its the only face cleanser I have found that really gets my foundation off – AND I starting getting compliments on my skin. This is what I do:

    1. I take off my mascara with the Somaluxe Face Cleanser
    2. Rinse face with warm water.

From other reviews, I then massage my face with the cleanser for 30-60 seconds. Skin feels nice not tight.I am 40+ and everyone says I look 30 !

I dampen a cotton pad with warm water and then add a little oil, it works great. Just wipe over face and makeup is removed easily….i usually use olive oil or jojoba, but any of the natural oils would be fine.

Have you tried jojoba oil? It is the only one that doesn’t break me out. It is supposed to be the best for those with acne prone skin as it is the best non-comedogenic oil.

Can you apply onions and garlic juice on your hair for 3 weeks without washing it if you fix a weavon on your hair. I want to know if it will have an adverse effect on your hair after removing the weavon and then wash your hair.

It may be uncomfortable because the onion juice can make your hair very stiff while its on. I usually wash it within a few hours too because the smell can get powerful.
