How to Stay Asleep All Night by Taking 3 Natural Ingredients
Not being able to sleep soundly or all through the night without waking several times is one of the worst feelings ..especially when it happens night after night. It can really make you feel terrible and isn’t good for you either. So, I’ve been trying to research some natural solutions for how to stay asleep all night. I never had trouble sleeping up until the past few months. I started waking up every night at 2am and 4am. Then, my sleeping trouble got worse, because after it hit 4am, I couldn’t get back to sleep at all and I would lie there wide awake until 9am.

I’ve been looking into every possible thing I can do to try to get some better sleep without resorting to getting a prescription. I was so desperate, I considered using Benadryl to knock myself out, but I can’t take that because it dries my throat out too much. To try and find the answer, I made a list of everything I could do to help me get a good sound night’s sleep. Luckily, I never had trouble falling asleep…it was just that I couldn’t stay asleep!

SO… I combined three methods I found online when I was researching how to stay asleep all night to get the most benefit and to make a “magic mixture” I could take to get a good night’s sleep.

How to Stay Asleep All Night with 3 Natural Ingredients:

I take a mixed spoonful of coconut oil, raw honey, and sea salt right before I go to bed every night.

The three components of fat from the coconut oil, sugar from the honey, and the salt all work to help your body be sustained throughout the night. This mixture helps you stay a sleep throughout the night and also helps reduce the impact of spikes in stress hormones or cortisol, which can often cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.

Why Does this Magic Mixture of Ingredients Work?

This magic mixture for how to stay asleep all night has been like a miracle for me!

The fat in coconut is beneficial right before bed because the fat gives your body sustained energy throughout the night. Having it before bed will prevent you from waking up hungry. Also, coconut oil fats prevent your blood sugar/insulin from spiking which is often a cause of sleeping troubles. Coconut oil provides your body with nutrients that allow your body to manufacture optimal amounts of sleep hormones.

You may be wondering why you would want to have honey that contains sugar before bed? And you’re thinking, “Doesn’t that cause blood sugar spikes that will make it even harder to sleep?” Actually, no, it’s going to help you sleep better. This is because the honey ensures an adequate amount of storage of liver glycogen for your brain. During sleep your brain uses energy and primarily gets this energy from the glycogen (sugar) stored in your liver. When you don’t have enough liver glycogen to provide energy for the brain, your adrenal glands pump out more of the stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol. If you have high amounts of these stress hormones, they can cause you to have difficulty sleeping. According to this site, raw honey is 22% better at producing liver glycogen compared to processed honey you’ll typically find in the food store.

Having some sea salt right before bed is another important component as it helps lower the stress hormones as well. Salt aids in energy production so your energy can be sustained throughout the night. When you have adequate sodium in your bloodstream, your stress response is reduced and your body won’t pump out as much adrenaline or cortisol. Salt helps your body stay in a homeostatic state so that your adrenaline won’t spike during the night and cause you to wake up, at horrible times like 2am and 4am. There is even some evidence that salt raises your oxytocin level, which is a hormone that helps you feel calm and relaxed.

By combining all three ingredients, you get the benefits of all of them helping you to get to sleep and stay asleep through the night.

What You Need for the Magic Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon of raw honey (make sure it’s raw, unprocessed)
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt

How to Use the Magic Mixture:

I keep jars of coconut oil and raw honey on a table near my bed at night along with a bag of sea salt and glass of warm water.

The main goal is just to take all three ingredients right before you go to bed. So you can do it however you feel most comfortable.

Option 1: Mix the coconut oil, raw honey, in a dish and sprinkle some sea salt on it. Mix up the ingredients a little. Put it on a spoon and swallow, then chase with water.
Option 2: Take the coconut oil, raw honey separately and chase with water. Then, you could add the sea salt to a small cup of water and drink it.

If You Wake Up in the Middle of the Night

Just take the mixture again anytime you wake up and you should be able to fall back asleep much easier, in about 30 minutes or less.

If you’ve been trying to find a solution for how to stay asleep all night, you have to give this mixture of ingredients a try! So many have commented on this post that it has really helped them.

Have you tried any of these ingredients to help you stay sleep all night? If any other remedies have worked for you, I would love to hear them in the comments.

You can skip the honey and just do the coconut oil and sea salt. My mom doesn’t do the honey part either because of the sugar, but she says the coconut oil and sea salt has been helping sleep so much better!

I will try this for staying asleep. I use a little lavender oil under my nose before bed. It really helps me relax and fall asleep. But it isn’t always a sure thing. Especially if like me you can’t shut your brain off.

Thanks for the info! Will try.

Enjoyed coming across this site as I go about my own journey to find more natural means to go about things. I have tried to add these to my nightly tea. Have you read anything that says the hot water/heat changes the effects of the oil/honey/salt? best wishes

Thank you for this great info! I wish I could take it. However, I cannot do the saturated fat in the coconut oil or the sugar in the honey or the sodium in the sea salt right now… But I do know that it is very effective and a healthy way for most everyone else.

Could you add the mixture to a nighttime tea like camomile? I know it had become a fad to put coconut oil in coffee. And I usually put honey in my tea anyway. Would these items together with herbs from tea have any negative?

For your babe I would make sure to take gluten out of her diet for the reflux. Also I would rub therapeutic grade essential oils on her feet. Lavender is a great one to use. I use DoTerra, if you are interested in getting them wholesale you can give me your email. I also would let my kiddos sleep right next to me so if they woke up, I would nurse or pat their back and they would go right back to sleep. My 4 kids didn’t sleep thru the night for 3 years, but sleeping next to them I was able to get the rest I needed. Good luck to you.

      Erin,

If your baby has reflux… it’s most likely allergic to something you are giving it. Remove milk (casein, whey) from your child’s diet and if that doesn’t work, remove soy. If you’re breastfeeding, stop eating these two items one at a time to see what’s effecting your child. My doctor said my son wasn’t allergic to milk. I finally stopped listening to my doctor and listened to myself. Happy son, happy Momma.

My friend is a PA. Went through same thing. She was going to specialists for her baby with non stop vomiting and on her own removed dairy. Perfectly fine! It was to the point the GI pediatrician didn’t believe her it worked so quick.

Hi Erin, take your baby to a chiropractitioner who works with babies/children. Sometimes it is a nerve that gets stuck usually during c-section that cause reflux.

It’s only dangerous for babies, under the age of two , due to the risk of botulism. It’s fine for pregnant women, though I’d probably transition from the raw to pasteurized, just to be on the safe side.

Sometimes coconut oil can cause nausea due to the Lauric acid content. Could be your body isn’t used to such a large amount of an acidic substance (due to a less acidic/more basic diet) or you have high bacteria content in your stomach, which Lauric acid kills off, causing stomach/intestinal distress from the die off. Try starting with a smaller amt of oil and work your way up. Or choose a different kind of oil all together.

doTerra EO Cedarwood is a great EO for relaxing and sleeping. Always rub a drop in the arch of each foot and also at the base of the big toes. Then I also rub it behind my ears and across my forehead. It just takes a drop at each place. I also have used serenity, but not was much luck. I try to switch between the two. I use oils for as many things as possible to replace OTC drugs and pharmaceuticals.

I’m glad to hear it helped for a short time. Did you change anything else that may have affected your sleep? (how much you do during the day, new supplements etc.) I’ve been keeping a notebook for the past few months writing down basically everything I do lol (when and what I eat and where I go/what I do) to try to find a connection when I have a bad nights sleep. This mixture has been helping me soo much!! I sleep good, knock on wood, most nights now and once every few weeks I’ll have a worse night where I wake up. But can’t seem to connect it to anything yet.

I found that when I was using turmeric with oil and pepper I would have the deepest best night sleep and my energy levels were insanely high.
You just take equal turmeric to oil and a few sprinkles of cracked pepper.
I was making up golden paste and taking a teaspoon about a hour before bed. Some people find they need to take 4 hours prior to sleep but it works.

I have been taking 2 tablespoons of coconut oil every night for 1yr now. As I was a shocking sleeper would go to bed and still be awake at least 2, 3 hrs later, it took me a few weeks to realize I was going straight to sleep coconut oil is the best thing ever and now I have great nights sleep.

Sea salt does not effect your blood pressure.

Mine is so low I have to add regular, non bleached, non chemical salt to bring up my blood pressure.

Alternative ways to up low blood pressure
      1- Raw apple cider vinegar
      2- unsulfered molasses

Just know that too low blood pressure is just as bad as too high.

That is not true. Sea salt DOES still effect blood pressure in just the same way. My husband has a disorder with uncontrolled blood pressure and we use sea salt to raise his bp when it’s too low. I confirmed with my husband’s cardiologist that sea salt and table salt both have the same effect on blood pressure.

I have low blood pressure, and when I had tried ACV (apple cider vinegar) for my sinus infection, I really felt that it lowered my blood pressure because of how I felt. When my blood pressure is goes really low my energy level is so low i can barely function. My energy level dropped to zero after about a little more than a week of taking the ACV for my sinuses. I then did some research and found that ACV is good for people with high blood pressure because it helps to lower it, which explained to me why I felt so bad. It wiped out my sinus infection though! I drank it, sniffed it, and inhaled it several times a day for two days, and it got rid of it. Maybe I will try unbleached white, non chemical salt for my low blood pressure though.

Hi there, would this work with MCT oil instead of coconut oil? I have a hard time gulping down coconut oil. I oil pull with it and use ezpeller pressed coconut oil.

I would love to try it and be able to sleep through the night. I usually have a hard time trying to fall asleep. Now my husband wakes me up with his snoring. I don’t feel rested anymore.

I snore and just had a sleep test to see if I have Sleep Apnea. I wake my husband, too. I go in to see the test results in July. Maybe that’s part of your husbands problem. I’m hoping they can do something for me. It disrupts my sleep, too, and I’m exhausted during the day.

What did the sleep study result reveal? I did sleep studies last year and found out that I stop breathing 36 times each hour. I am now using a Bi-Pap machine and have not stopped breathing since. I didn’t take long to get used to the “nose pillows” and my sweet husband no longer has to use ear plugs at night. I do however have trouble staying asleep due to a lot of complicated medical conditions. I take medications that individually would keep one asleep, and in combination they should knock a horse out. But, I don’t sleep more than 3 hours! I am going to try this recipe and report back after I do a trial test.

That was my first response also was using himalayan salt instead. Also, I do kinesiology so will test myself to see how much with each ingredient before I take it at night. Can’t wait to try the recipe. I know oil pulling twice a day helps my sleep tremendously. Have tried oil pulling once a day and I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep. I was researching what was in coconut oil that helps me sleep and came across this website. Thank you for putting this out there.

Is the coconut oil a liquid? Where do you find the honey? I’m new to this natural ways. I am awake every 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Then it takes around 2 hours to fall back to sleep only to be awake in an hour to hour and a half. I feel awful and exhausted all the time!

Coconut oil is liquid at warm temps, but hardens in colder temps. So depends on the temp of your home. I linked to the honey I use above. Hope it works for you!

Try mixing the coconut oil in with almond milk!!! Almonds are great for energy and ironically also help you go to sleep!!! I use the organic coconut MCT oil two teaspoons in about two cups of organic almond milk, ironically I used my concoction for weight loss and just happen to run up on this article!! I also drink organic sleep tea with passionflower in it and I add a teaspoon or two of raw organic local honey. The local honey is great for building up your immune system to the local pollen since that’s what the bees collect it from, it has dual purpose. Just thought I’d share my nighty night ritual since it’s similar.

I take a 1mg. melatonin &/or rub double strength magnesium oil on my feet and legs, (restless legs at night) a lot of times. Also have dissolved magnesium in water with great lakes gelatin and drink before bed. yes, I sometimes have more night trips to the bathroom,( use a pink bulb in your nightlight) but I can fall right back to sleep and sleep better! I could give you the scientific data to back it but would have to get the hubby involved. Don’t believe all that you read.

Coconut Oil (extra virgin-organic) has been proven healthy for humans, BUT its high in Triglycerides so if this is an issue with your health, beware.
I’ve also read numerous articles about the benefits of Pink Salt over Sea Salt. I’ve bought it and it appears to taste stronger. Again-Beware if you have High Blood Pressure and are on Salt restriction.

Pink salt is pink because of high fluoride. I stay away from that. High fluoride can mess with your thyroid and adrenal. Look up Cathy’s Horses. These horses had serious health problems, formerly champions, when they moved to an area where their was was fluoridated. And there are a lot if sources of fluoride besides water now. Green tea, as Asia has a lot of fluoride in its soil, unless you can get a plant and grow up yourself or buy American green tea. Also teflon cookware, a lot of things that have been manufactured with fluoridated water like reconstituted juices, soda, many meds, some insecticides. There’s quite a surprising list.

Angela- Coconut Oil will raise your Triglyceride levels, but Cholesterol LDL / HDL should improve.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ARB73jV4mro cholesterol is a necessary molecule. Your myelin nerve coverings are cholesterol. Many of your hormones are made from cholesterol. The cell membrane has cholesterol rafts to stabilize the membrane. Your brain is 75% cholesterol. I tried it and it worked! I found that I cannot take the oil on a empty stomach at night. Strange I can take the oil in the morning. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for your article and recipe. I am giving your recipe a try with a little twist.

I am trying warmed up milk instead of water which makes the coconut oil mixture much more drinkable / tolerable and I can’t foresee any direct issues since milk has been prescribed as a sleep remedy for a long time. Yes, I am aware it’s not because it (i.e. milk) contains the enzyme tryptophan, which urban legend has it will lull you to sleep.

I have become aware some time back that salt mixed with sugar helps you to sleep and might aid with headaches / migraines. I need to take in extra salt to replenish my reserves which are drained from running practices of 10km+ for a marathon. Since electrolyte exists out of at least 5 elements, the salt replaces at least two of them while also aiding with sleep and potential muscle cramps. The rest I take presently in supplement pill form such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Calcium I have also produced from chicken egg shells. Perhaps milk provides calcium, perhaps not. There is much debate if cows milk is good or bad for human consumption. I have no problem with it and therefore have no issue using this as a water replacement. I love my daily glass of milk which I buy fresh in 10 liters from my fruit and veg store.

The important thing for me is that all the ingredients I use are natural. I mined the sea salt myself in a lagoon at Walvisbay harbour, Namibia (About 10 kg). Comes in crystal form which dissolves well in fluid. They honey is natural coming from Capetown, South Africa. The coconut oil I got from my Fruit and Veg store and comes from Mozambique. I bought it not exactly knowing what I was going to use it for but you have me a good idea.

I started dooing my cooking with natural animal fat which I produced myself. One thing Namibia, the country I am staying in is very well know for is our hormone free beef and its this beef fat which I started using 6 months ago after some extensive research on the topic. Based on my personal findings, I will never look into using plant based oils for frying meat unless I have no other choice. I used olive oil most of the time for that but tend to believe that such oils simply can’t tolerate temperatures very well which leads to breakdown of their structures leading to risk of cancer and whatever.

I am very much into analyzing all kinds of studies concerning health foods and home remedies and take what I consider to be truthful and helpful in my own life. This has been very beneficial to my health and lifestyle as I have gone back in time to follow old proven diets etc.

Taking up running is just another of my experiments and it is also paying off.

I don’t believe in taking chemical prescriptions which is the reason I landed on your page. Doctors see me perhaps once in a decade, usually because I have had an accident or as a precautionary measure when I suspect home remedies might be unsuccessful.

Thanks, Volker! It sounds like you have a nice life living out in nature in Namibia, making your own sea salt, eating hormone-free beef, running marathons, watching your health. I would love to visit Namibia and meditate on the stars in the middle of the desert. I hear the sea is cold but that you have miles and miles of empty beaches – except the occasional lion. How cool is that? Lucky you! Cheers!

Lori, do you think I could use olive oil instead of coconut oil?

Believe it or not my cholesterol went up over 80 points from ingesting a tablespoon of coconut oil daily and my doctor was concerned even though both the good and bad went up. it seems I’m very sensitive to saturated fat.

If I wake up I take 1 cap l-theanine and can usually sleep through the night.

As far as WHY the coconut oil might work…it’s probably due to the ketones it provides the brain possibly due to low blood sugar issues…the brain CAN use ketones instead of glucose.

MCT oil also works…but it peaks early and drops off…whereas coconut oil lasts longer. Ketone levels.

If you wake up in the morning with a “foggy head”…try a tsp of MCT oil in a cup of coffee.

      Check out Dr. Mary Newport.
