Last month, my mom and I decided to try out some natural ways to tint our eyebrows. The first method we found for how to tint eyebrows with coffee didn’t work for us. However, after coming up with our own method, we discovered the best way to tint your eyebrows with coffee.
We are really happy with our results from using this method for how to tint eyebrows with coffee naturally! Our eyebrows are significantly darker and the color lasted pretty long! It’s so nice to not have to keep applying makeup daily to darken your eyebrows. Plus, this method is all natural and very inexpensive.
Tinting Your Eyebrows Naturally:
Eyebrows are a defining feature that can really change how you look. My eyebrows used to be darker when I was younger and as I get older they seem to be getting lighter. My mom, who has always had light blonde hair and eyebrows has noticed that her eyebrows have gotten lighter with age too.
A few days ago, my mom mentioned that she wants to try going to get her eyebrows colored at the local hair salon. Then, I asked if she would try something natural first before getting them colored.
I’ve been using natural methods to color my hair at home with black walnut hair dye and coffee, so I thought maybe we could try one of those methods on her eyebrows to see if it worked.
The First Method We Used to Color Our Eyebrows with Coffee
When I started researching how to tint eyebrows with coffee online, I came across an article with a step by step description. It sounded pretty easy and all you needed was coffee grounds, coconut oil and honey. We followed the directions, and applied the mixture to my mom’s eyebrows. Unfortunately, it didn’t work at all for tinting her eyebrows.
When you look at the mixture, it doesn’t really make sense that it would work. The coffee grounds can’t dissolve in coconut oil so there is no color released from them. I began to wonder if their method for how to tint eyebrows with coffee was effective for anyone.
We Came Up with Our Own Way to Tint Eyebrows with Coffee
When I was working on recipes for my, Make Your Own Makeup e-book, I discovered that one of the best natural ways to get a fake tan was to use instant coffee. So, then I thought there must be a way to figure out how to tint eyebrows with coffee using it, since it worked so well for darkening skin.
We went out to buy some instant coffee from the grocery store. The kind I bought comes with several single serve packets of instant coffee. I poured three of the single serve packets in a cup and added just enough hot water to cover the coffee grounds. It should be a pretty thick consistency, like honey. I stirred the mixture and then let it sit in the cup for several hours.
After leaving the coffee in a cup on my counter for several hours, the mixture became very dark. Perfect for tinting eyebrows with coffee!
My mom used a cotton swab to apply the mixture to her eyebrows and wow, did they look great! Then to help remove any clumps of the coffee, she used a disposable eyelash makeup brush (pictured below) to brush her eyebrows. We got a pack of 100 disposable eyelash makeup brushes online for just $5.00!
How Long Does the Coffee Tint Last?
The eyebrow coffee tint lasted about one to two weeks. It is not permanent, but it’s a great alternative to applying makeup everyday.
If you really scrub your eyebrows with soap and water often the color may fade faster.
How Can You Change the Color of the Eyebrow Tint?
When we made the coffee tint mixture, we tested it out at different times to try to figure out how to get the best shade. The more coffee grounds you put in the mixture, the darker the mixture will become. Also if you use less water, the tint will be darker too. Adding more water to the coffee, will dilute the coffee and the color won’t be as dark.
Another factor we discovered was how long we left the mixture of water and coffee sit on the counter. When we tried it right after making it, it wasn’t as dark as it was after leaving it out and letting it steep for several hours. One time we let the mixture sit over night and it got really really dark.
So, you can experiment with how to tint eyebrows with coffee by changing the ratio of water to coffee and how long you let it steep. It depends if you want to just darken your eyebrows a little bit or get a drastically darker color.
How to Tint Eyebrows with Coffee Naturally:
What you need:
- 3 packets of single serve instant coffee packets (or about ¼ cup instant coffee grounds)
- 1/8 to ¼ cup of water
- cotton swab
- disposable eyelash makeup brush
Directions:
1. Put the instant coffee grounds into a cup and add just enough hot water to cover them.
2. Stir the coffee in the water until it is completely dissolved. The mixture should be a thick consistency almost like honey. You can add more water or coffee grounds until you reach the right consistency.
3. Dip a cotton swab in the mixture and apply it to your eyebrows.
4. Use a clean eyelash makeup brush to brush through your eyebrows to remove any clumps or excess coffee.
Do not wash your eyebrows for at least 12 hours after applying the coffee eyebrow tint. The more you wash them, the quicker the color will fade.

Does the longer you leave the mixture on your eyebrows determine how dark it gets too?or is it the same ratio of darkness for any period of time?
Naji
How long should I keep the mixture on my eyebrows before I wash it out?
Lori
We left it on for at least 24 hours.

What color hair do you have? What ratio of water to coffee did you use? My hair got a little darker from using coffee. This recipe for coffee eyebrow tint is much more potent with the ratio of coffee to water – so you can make your eyebrows really dark.
Lori
Hi Ayesha, Yes, it works for hair dye too. It is easier to make the eyebrow dye very potent with a lot of coffee grounds and little water. I’ve never tried to make the coffee hair dye as potent. I assume it would work the same though.
The eyebrow tint with coffee lasts about 2 weeks for me with just regular showers/washing my face.

I guess looking at those coffee stains in my cup had a deeper meaning. :-). A brilliant idea nevertheless. A clever natural way to do things. I wonder if you can make a whole range of coffee cosmetics. You might be onto a big idea here.
Lori
Thank you! We were glad to discover how well it worked 🙂
Laurie
What a great idea.. Have you tried this with hair as a hair dye?
Dana
Hi….I’ve done this with coffee on hair (retired hair dresser here)….What you hav e to be careful of when doing this to hair is the actual color of your hair. Gray hair will grab a very light “tea” color and can even appear “orangy”. It DOES however, add a nice rich luster to clean brown, black, or dark blond. Hope this helps.
Lori
Thank you! I have used it on my hair to darken it a little bit. My hair is naturally medium brown, so it only darkens my hair a little bit. It makes a big difference for anyone with lighter hair though.
