I never imagined using onion juice for hair growth, but after reading the great results of a recent study, I decided to give it a try!
Onions are more than just a healthy vegetable. They have been shown to help increase hair growth and reverse grey hair when applied to the scalp. That’s why every night you’ll find me applying onion juice for hair growth.
Onion juice has been used for hundreds of years to treat thin and greying hair.
Onion juice helps by providing nourishment and circulation to the hair follicles. It also kills germs, parasites, and is helpful in treating some fungi infections, all of which can aid in prevention of hair loss.
How Onion Juice for Hair Growth Works:
Onions are high in sulfur, which helps in regenerating the hair follicles. They are also beneficial in decreasing inflammation.
A few weeks ago, a breakthrough study for thin and grey hair was published and showed great results for the effectiveness of a topical compound called pseudocatalase (PC-KUS). The reason this topical cream was found effective was that it targeted the cause of grey and thinning hair.
Research from Bradford University in the UK and several other universities have shown that grey and thinning hair is caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide and a decrease in the natural antioxidant, catalase. When a buildup of hydrogen peroxide occurs at the hair follicles, it causes oxidative stress resulting in greying and thinning hair.
Catalase can not only be found in the topical cream, but it can also be produced from the application of onion juice! Onion juice reacts similarly when it is applied. It increases the level of catalase on the skins surface, reducing the buildup of hydrogen peroxide.
Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Greying Hair
The results from the topical application of onion juice can be observed within just a few weeks.
One study from the Journal of Dermatology found that just after four weeks of using onion juice, 74% of individuals with alopecia areata experienced significant hair regrowth. Within six weeks of using onion juice, 84% of the individuals were reported to have hair regrowth.
How to Make Onion Juice
When I first started researching using onion juice for hair growth, I immediately did a search for where I could buy some. Even though you can buy it online, it is better to use the juice of a fresh onion. Any onion juice you purchase from a store has most likely been sitting on a shelf for months. Fresh onion juice will be more potent. It is best to make the juice in small amounts so it is does not have to be stored for a long period of time.
There are 3 Ways You Can Make Onion Juice:
1) Juicer- If you have a juicer, this is the easiest way to make onion juice. Just peel the onion, cut it in half and put it in the juicer. I decided to buy a juicer just for the purpose of juicing onions because it is the fastest and easiest way to get the most juice. You can get an inexpensive juicer and they work great. I bought this one because of the very low price and absolutely love it!
2) Blender/Food Processor- Peel the onion and cut it into about 4 sections. Then put them into your blender or food processor and start blending. Lastly, strain the mixture so that only the juice is remaining.
3) Grater – Peel the onion and cut it in half. Grate both halves of the onion over a dish. Then strain the mixture to get just the juice.
How to Use Onion Juice for Hair Growth and Grey Hair
For the first application of onion juice, you may want to test it on a small area (in case you may be allergic to it) or water down the mixture. Even though it’s natural, pure onion juice is strong.
- Apply the onion juice daily to your scalp and lightly massage it in. This helps stimulate the hair follicles and allows for maximum absorption.
- Leave the onion juice on for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
The smell is powerful, but the results may be worth it! To avoid smelling like onion all day, you can apply it at night and then wash it out before you go to bed.
If you’re allergic to onions or are looking for another option, there are many more ways you can increase hair growth with natural ingredients.
did anyone c results for grey hair? post here if u did, i have lots of grey hair n i wana reverse it, i really need a guidance
Make sure to use Red Onions and dont use garlic on your skin, it can burn you. Wash your hair with natural shampoo and then apply Coconut Oil after. Coconut oil is very good for your hair and it masks the onion smell.
I tried it before for a week but I was tired of making the juice. Im going to get me a juicer now to make it easier. I will also try to eat red onions every day, I read somewhre you also have to do this treatment from within. I will be back to report
If this works I owe you a date LORI 🙂

I have white hairs & regularly (every 3weeks) apply hair color. Will this impact the onion juice scalp treatment!
Hi. Can I drink the onion juice instead of applying it on my scalp? I have hair fall and grey hair issues. The problem is quite a few hairs in my beard are turning grey as well. As applying the juice onto my beard won’t be quite practical, will drinking the juice be equally beneficial? Thanks!!
I haven’t read any studies about drinking it. In the studies they all apply it topically.
I have hair loss problem. I started to apply onion paste in the night and wear a shower cap. Will it cause any side effect? or I have to leave it freely without shower cap

Wow, that’s fantastic!
GREAT INFORMATION!. I WAS THINKING OF USING BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES BUT IT HAS TOO MUCH SUGAR – DOING LOW CARB/KETO. IN YOUR OPINION IS THIS THE BEST RECIPE TO GET RID OF GRAY HAIR?.
The study found very good results. I haven’t tried it for gray hair myself though.
Am using onion juice now more then a month now. It is amazing i did not used shampoo at all. Onion juice is very good remedy will stick to it till life. In between i wash hair twice a week. Only egg yellow +castor oil+Olive oil. And onion juice daily but if i miss one day second day definite. Hair soft no dandruff. No itchy Vichy– Some people asked me gray hair. well i don’t have grey hair. only hardly 10 to 15 grey hair. I am near 40s. I think to avoid smell can use rose water also. I did not try but will try. Actually if you walk in open sky. smell will go off. Not fully but at-least other will not be able to smell unless put nose in to your hair :).
So glad it’s helping!!
What if i add some garlic mint or ginger to this mixture or all of them together do u know if that will do anything? or if its good for hair loss/growth??
I’ve read that those are beneficial for increasing hair growth too.
Thanks to GOD. Onion is a very very very big gift to the mankind. My sharing. I had a small spot/gap on my beard right side of the face which started growing and growing and reached the size of lemon. Someone told me need steroid injection on the affected area someone told me cream. But i did not use none . Latter someone told me garlic. Before sleeping rub garlic harder on the area so that your skin is removed i did it for 1 week and the area was wounded and cured back after a week but it did not work. One of my customer told me onion before sleeping. Cut the onion and just slightly rub on the area the juice will do the thing when it reach inside the skin and when wake up in the morning wash it. I did it for 2 weeks with in one week hair start growing. Thanks to GOD. And now area is fully covered with hairs. As am very curious about my hair so i start doing the same thing for my hair. Where my dandruff is gone and the scratchy feeling is also gone after using the onion juice. Actually it cleared the entire fungi thing. I will continue.
Wow, that’s amazing the onion juice worked for growing your beard!
I did this onion juice on my hair for four days now but I didn’t wash it yet, is this bad or good ?? And for how long I can continue this?? I can’t wash my hair everyday
Thank u in advance
I don’t think that not washing it would affect it too much. I usually just wash mine after several hours of putting it on because the smell starts to bother me. But, probably the longer I leave it on and let it absorb, the better.
Yes it true that onion juice or paste is very good for preventing hair loss problems and it stimulates hair growth.
I have use it once a week and the results is great and does works, don’t have to pay for very expensive tonic or shampoo and without results. cheers
Wow, so glad to hear that!
Just thought I would share as I am appreciative of everyone else’s contributions. I have used onion juice daily on my eyebrows for 2-3 months but with no effect yet regarding reversing gray hair. I blended for the first month, then juiced for around two months. I intend to stick with it for a while.
Keep us updated! Hope you see some results!
Hi Lori! I’m a 20 year old guy and I have this widows peak on my forehead and I saw that it’s a little bit receding because my dad had it too.. And I don’t want to recede my hairline as much as he has right now. Can this onion juice makes my hairline back or perhaps stops receding? Please respond to my concern..
It very well may help. The studies results are very promising and if you read everyone’s comments on this post, so many have had great results!
i am having too much hairfall . my hair is becoming light or thing and the hair remained same lenght for 2 monts. why is it so // why my hair does not grow fast. what should i do to make it long in one week
I started trying this remedy few weeks ago, but I was not regular at all. I have been applying it twice a week, but now I am quite regular and applying it every day, because I started getting the results. My hair fall has reduced to zero (0),really. Here is what I did : I am 21 year old indian guy (if that makes any difference) . I was losing a lot of hair which was really irritating me, so I went completely bald. Yeah, I shaved my head and then started applying onion juice. At the same time, I also started applying shampoo and oil prescribed by a GP. I was applying all the oil and onion juice on scalp (bald-shaved head). My new hair are really really thick and strong. I think it’s a cumulative effect of oil, onion juice and few antifungal medicines prescribed by GP. I am posting this after 1 month of shaving head. I will post again after few weeks 🙂
So happy to hear it is helping!
The scientific studies on natural remedies for hair loss has proven that applying onion juice and consuming onions is helpful in controlling hair loss and other problems related to hair such as dandruff, fungal infections and yeast infections. It has been found that onion juice is also effective in preventing premature graying of hair.
Onions have rich sulfur content in them. Onion juices when applied on the scalp alone or in combination with other hair loss remedies can improve the blood circulation to the scalp. Sulfur also improves the production of collagen tissues which is necessary for the growth of hair. Hair grows from the hair follicles in the scalp and increased blood supply to the scalp brings better nutrients and nourishment to the follicles and promotes hair growth. The sulfur content in the juice also has anti-bacterial properties and prevents the growth of fungi and bacteria on the scalp which reduces the chances of losing hair due to these infections. Onion juice increases the strength of the hair and prevents thinning and breakage.
