I never imagined using onion juice for hair growth, but after reading the great results of a recent study, I decided to give it a try!

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Gray HairOnions are more than just a healthy vegetable. They have been shown to help increase hair growth and reverse grey hair when applied to the scalp. That’s why every night you’ll find me applying onion juice for hair growth.

Onion juice has been used for hundreds of years to treat thin and greying hair.

Onion juice helps by providing nourishment and circulation to the hair follicles.  It also kills germs, parasites, and is helpful in treating some fungi infections, all of which can aid in prevention of hair loss.

How Onion Juice for Hair Growth Works:

Onions are high in sulfur, which helps in regenerating the hair follicles. They are also beneficial in decreasing inflammation.

A few weeks ago, a breakthrough study for thin and grey hair was published and showed great results for the effectiveness of a topical compound called pseudocatalase (PC-KUS). The reason this topical cream was found effective was that it targeted the cause of grey and thinning hair.

Research from Bradford University in the UK and several other universities have shown that grey and thinning hair is caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide and a decrease in the natural antioxidant, catalase. When a buildup of hydrogen peroxide occurs at the hair follicles, it causes oxidative stress resulting in greying and thinning hair.

Catalase can not only be found in the topical cream, but it can also be produced from the application of onion juice! Onion juice reacts similarly when it is applied. It increases the level of catalase on the skins surface, reducing the buildup of hydrogen peroxide.

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Greying Hair

The results from the topical application of onion juice can be observed within just a few weeks.

One study from the Journal of Dermatology found that just after four weeks of using onion juice, 74% of individuals with alopecia areata experienced significant hair regrowth. Within six weeks of using onion juice, 84% of the individuals were reported to have hair regrowth.

How to Make Onion Juice

When I first started researching using onion juice for hair growth, I immediately did a search for where I could buy some. Even though you can buy it online, it is better to use the juice of a fresh onion. Any onion juice you purchase from a store has most likely been sitting on a shelf for months. Fresh onion juice will be more potent. It is best to make the juice in small amounts so it is does not have to be stored for a long period of time.

There are 3 Ways You Can Make Onion Juice:

1) Juicer- If you have a juicer, this is the easiest way to make onion juice. Just peel the onion, cut it in half and put it in the juicer. I decided to buy a juicer just for the purpose of juicing onions because it is the fastest and easiest way to get the most juice. You can get an inexpensive juicer and they work great. I bought this one because of the very low price and absolutely love it!

2) Blender/Food Processor- Peel the onion and cut it into about 4 sections. Then put them into your blender or food processor and start blending. Lastly, strain the mixture so that only the juice is remaining.

3) Grater – Peel the onion and cut it in half. Grate both halves of the onion over a dish. Then strain the mixture to get just the juice.

How to Use Onion Juice for Hair Growth and Grey Hair

For the first application of onion juice, you may want to test it on a small area (in case you may be allergic to it) or water down the mixture. Even though it’s natural, pure onion juice is strong.

Steps:

  1. Apply the onion juice daily to your scalp and lightly massage it in. This helps stimulate the hair follicles and allows for maximum absorption.
  2. Leave the onion juice on for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

The smell is powerful, but the results may be worth it! To avoid smelling like onion all day, you can apply it at night and then wash it out before you go to bed.

If you’re allergic to onions or are looking for another option, there are many more ways you can increase hair growth with natural ingredients.Apply Onion Juice for Hair Growth and to Reverse Grey Hair

Make sure you are not anaemic (not enough red blood cells), not defficient in folic acid and B12! Those can also cause hair falling out.

      Bharat,
The original news flurry about catalase as a means to restore hair color in victims of the disease Virtiligo is what drew the attention of many to the time-honored use of onion juice, which also contains catalase. In fact, the use of onion catalase for falling hair and greying is almost the entire focus of Lori’s blog and reader response on the subject.

However, since onion catalase has an odor problem, its effect can be duplicated without odor by application of synthetic catalase, or PC(KUS). This substance can be purchased in powder form, mixed with water, combed through the hair and allowed to remain all day without a significant odor, according to one who has used it. Although the chemical activity of synthetic catalase depends to some extent on exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunshine), there are reports PC(KUS) works without sunshine, but to a lesser degree.

Therapeutic use of catalase appears based on the reduction of peroxide in and around the hair follicle. According to one theory, peroxide reduction or removal permits melanocytes actually to migrate back into the hair follicle, restoring color. By the same principle, peroxide reduction may allow resumption of hair follicle activity, even in “dead” follicles in balding areas.

However, people with a diagnosed case of Virtiligo should consult a dermatologist, since the disease is more complex than an overaccumulation of peroxides. Although the news about use of catalase to “cure” Virtiligo is a sign of progress in medical research, the disease is also linked to endocrine disorders and autoimmune disease. Such conditions include hyperthyroidism and adrenocortical insufficiency. Since hormones are not something to experiment with casually, a licensed medical practicioner is always the starting point.

For most catalase users, the question is how to refine use of catalase, maximizing removal of peroxides and promoting healthy hair follicles and regrowth of natural hair color.

The study only mentioned reversing grey and increasing hair growth; however, I believe the causes of grey and white hair both have the factor of a buildup of catalase. Hopefully someone will be able to comment with their results.

        Lori,
In your August 21, 2013, reply to “Bharat” (who said, “did, it work for white hair problem too. I had lots of white and keep on turning my lots of black hair white day by day. So, i am waiting for you people opinion lori that it will work for my white problem to turn them black again”), you said, “The study only mentioned reversing grey and increasing hair growth; however, I believe the causes of grey and white hair both have the factor of a buildup of catalase…”

This statement may have confused readers who read the study and concluded buildup in the hair follicles of hydrogen peroxide is the cause of reduced hair growth and greying. In fact, since catalase reduces H2O2, it is a chemical antagonist of peroxide. Did you mean H2O2, when you referred to a “buildup of catalase”?

    Lori dear,

I have the onion juice for a a week. It strengthened the hair root I guess, the loss hair is reducing significantly after 3 days of usage. Is 6 weeks is enough for the therapy? Can I stop using it afterward at all? Because I can not stand the smell, I apply it daily at night and wash it 3 times to clean the smell. It’s seems the onion aroma is everywhere of my body and I need to change my pillow cover daily.

I’m not sure how often it would need to be used to keep up with the results. I have been trying to do it at least every few weeks now and am still seeing results.

In the study participants used it 2 times a day for 6 weeks. I started out using it daily and then cut back to once a week and still saw good results. It is quite powerful so some may want to start out diluting it. I used white onion but I don’t believe the study mentioned which type they used. Both types of onions have pretty similar amounts of antioxidants.

        Hello Sandeep,

I don’t have pics to compare as its only twenty days so far,but my hair stopped falling in just a week after using this therapy, magically.I want to continue for two months as I’ve read that people have got new hair growth if used for two months, daily.
I think main reasons behind hair fall are stress, illness,no healthy diet,no hair care, rigorous hair treatment, harsh shampoos, exposure to sun light, hard water, these things damage our hair.So keeping these reasons in mind if we care of ourselves,we can combat hair fall.
And I guess onion juice will stop hair fall once but if we don’t care other things then it may occur again.
So my suggestion to you is that you should also try onion juice without delay with a belief that it will help and forget all the stress,at least of hair fall, put on cap when in sun, take proper diet. And yes,I have sacrificed all fancy shampoos and conditioners that promise to stop hair fall and have switched to herbal shampoo and later a leave on serum.
While making onion juice I add coriander leaves and soaked and then boiled green tea leaves with its brown liquid, few drops of lemon juice. But initially only raw onion juice helped me a lot.You can try with onions only.

Hope my experience help you little.

        Thanks and regards,
        Neelam

Very encouraging news. I have some onion juice around my hairline as we speak.

I wash it after about an hour to get rid of the smell and my hair becomes stiff from the onion too.

Ive been using 90% onion / 10% garlic mix , blendered with a little water – to avoid having to make it daily , i freeze it , and when i need a little , defrost a small portion , its quick and easy , less hassel . Since using it for about 3 weeks , not every day , about 3 x a week , ive noticed my hair feels thicker / fuller , looks healthier , feels healthier , its still early days so we will see how it goes , but loving this stuff , its a great alternative to using normal shampoos , my hair has honestly never looked and felt so good . I do use normal shampoo about 2-3x a week , just to cleanse the hair , which i think is importnant and helps with the onion smell as well .. but i think to much is been made aboout the smell , if you get into a routine , its quick , and the smell is actually not that bad , the feel that the onion garlic mix is giving me is super , so thanks Lori and to everyone who has commented , so far its been life changing for me ..

In the study the participants used it daily. I started out using it daily, but then decreased it to only a few times per week or sometimes 1 time per week and still saw great results. I wash it out after because it eliminates the smell and my hair became stiff when it’s in.

The smell is powerful, but it’s really not the bad and it only smells for the 1 hour you have it on.
