I never imagined using onion juice for hair growth, but after reading the great results of a recent study, I decided to give it a try!

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Gray HairOnions are more than just a healthy vegetable. They have been shown to help increase hair growth and reverse grey hair when applied to the scalp. That’s why every night you’ll find me applying onion juice for hair growth.

Onion juice has been used for hundreds of years to treat thin and greying hair.

Onion juice helps by providing nourishment and circulation to the hair follicles.  It also kills germs, parasites, and is helpful in treating some fungi infections, all of which can aid in prevention of hair loss.

How Onion Juice for Hair Growth Works:

Onions are high in sulfur, which helps in regenerating the hair follicles. They are also beneficial in decreasing inflammation.

A few weeks ago, a breakthrough study for thin and grey hair was published and showed great results for the effectiveness of a topical compound called pseudocatalase (PC-KUS). The reason this topical cream was found effective was that it targeted the cause of grey and thinning hair.

Research from Bradford University in the UK and several other universities have shown that grey and thinning hair is caused by a buildup of hydrogen peroxide and a decrease in the natural antioxidant, catalase. When a buildup of hydrogen peroxide occurs at the hair follicles, it causes oxidative stress resulting in greying and thinning hair.

Catalase can not only be found in the topical cream, but it can also be produced from the application of onion juice! Onion juice reacts similarly when it is applied. It increases the level of catalase on the skins surface, reducing the buildup of hydrogen peroxide.

Onion Juice for Hair Loss and Greying Hair

The results from the topical application of onion juice can be observed within just a few weeks.

One study from the Journal of Dermatology found that just after four weeks of using onion juice, 74% of individuals with alopecia areata experienced significant hair regrowth. Within six weeks of using onion juice, 84% of the individuals were reported to have hair regrowth.

How to Make Onion Juice

When I first started researching using onion juice for hair growth, I immediately did a search for where I could buy some. Even though you can buy it online, it is better to use the juice of a fresh onion. Any onion juice you purchase from a store has most likely been sitting on a shelf for months. Fresh onion juice will be more potent. It is best to make the juice in small amounts so it is does not have to be stored for a long period of time.

There are 3 Ways You Can Make Onion Juice:

1) Juicer- If you have a juicer, this is the easiest way to make onion juice. Just peel the onion, cut it in half and put it in the juicer. I decided to buy a juicer just for the purpose of juicing onions because it is the fastest and easiest way to get the most juice. You can get an inexpensive juicer and they work great. I bought this one because of the very low price and absolutely love it!

2) Blender/Food Processor- Peel the onion and cut it into about 4 sections. Then put them into your blender or food processor and start blending. Lastly, strain the mixture so that only the juice is remaining.

3) Grater – Peel the onion and cut it in half. Grate both halves of the onion over a dish. Then strain the mixture to get just the juice.

How to Use Onion Juice for Hair Growth and Grey Hair

For the first application of onion juice, you may want to test it on a small area (in case you may be allergic to it) or water down the mixture. Even though it’s natural, pure onion juice is strong.

Steps:

  1. Apply the onion juice daily to your scalp and lightly massage it in. This helps stimulate the hair follicles and allows for maximum absorption.
  2. Leave the onion juice on for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

The smell is powerful, but the results may be worth it! To avoid smelling like onion all day, you can apply it at night and then wash it out before you go to bed.

If you’re allergic to onions or are looking for another option, there are many more ways you can increase hair growth with natural ingredients.Apply Onion Juice for Hair Growth and to Reverse Grey Hair

Can I dilute the onion juice with aloe Vera gel? Or with oil like coconut/olive /castor oil…which combo would be good?

I diluted it with water, the oil may prevent it from being absorbed as well.

Hello, I posted on October 25th and it’s been a month and 1 days. I am still using onions everyday except I missed few days on purpose to let my scalp get air. I also massage my scalp with castor oil almost everyday and leave it all day. I shave my head almost every week which helps to massage my scalp with onion juice. I do it before bed and I keep it all night every night without any problems. When I get a pimple, it is because hair is stuck there, that’s all.
I do have before and after picture. You will see a huge difference. Hair growing and thickening but a lots of new baby hair growing on the front sides.
By the way, I do take a piece of onions, and I scrub my scalp directly, which left some empty spots, but those spots se growing new hair and it is thickening. I may say, I used the onions for about 3 months, and results? I let some of you judge it.
If you want to see before and after, please post ur email, and I will send the pics to help you ladies and gentleman gain some confidence.
One thing I will say, I am not allergic to onions and nobody ever smelled it while at work. Good luck all.

      Hi Adam,

Its great to hear your success story with hair regrowth. I have been using castor oil for last 2 months and I have felt a difference in my hair quality and density though nothing substantial. I also have noticed a few baby hair in the front but it’s been very slow maybe cuz I haven’t been regular with castor oil. After reading this article and your story, I am inspired to include onion and garlic juice along with castor oil and apply regularly. I wish to know what’s your daily schedule? is it shampoo everyday followed by castor oil and onion/garlic juice in night, or something else?

Also please share your before and after pics as it might boost my confidence in this therapy.

my mail id is [email protected]

god bless you and may your hair regrowth be phenomenal. 🙂

I would apply it to a dry scalp rather than when oil is on because the oil may prevent the onion juice from reaching the scalp and being absorbed.

I apply it and leave it on for about an hour and then wash it out. I didn’t see improvements for at least 4 to 6 weeks, as did those in the study, so it may be too soon to tell.

I use large yellow onions, but any kind just work just fine. They all have similar properties. You can read about the differences in my post here: https://www.treasuredtips.com/red-onions-vs-white-onions-which-ones-healthier/ The study did not mention which type of onion was used.

Please if anyone could tell me and give me a professional advise about using garlic shampoo. I ve been using recently garlic extract shampoo and after I wash my hair I do feel burning sensations over my scalp , so my question is why there is such burning and does this makes hair fall down or regrowth.

I don’t think there would be a reaction, but if there is coconut oil on, it may prevent the onion juice from reaching or fully absorbing into the scalp.

Hi, Lori. I’d love to try the onion juice on my scalp. But, I have a silly question. Is it safe for everyone to use them? I’m concerned because I’m in Malaysia and it is quite a warm place. I thought the onion is hot and it might irritate my scalp? If it is safe, I can’t wait to try it!

Hi Lisa, the onion juice can be quite powerful, you may want to try a small amount on just a section of your scalp to make sure you aren’t allergic to it.

I only leave it on for an hour or two because it makes my hair stiff and the smell starts to get to me. You may want to start out using it for a shorter time to make sure you aren’t allergic or sensitive to it.

I’m in my early 40s and struggled with hair loss since my early teens. About a month ago, I tried the onion scalp treatment using a yellow onion. I left it on overnight and washed my hair in the morning. The smell is strong but definitely tolerable. My hair felt lighter and had more volume after the first day. Two nights later, I repeated the treatment. Days after the second treatment, I noticed less hair falling from my scalp after I styled my hair. I’ve continued this treatment twice a week for the last 4 weeks. I used to run my fingers through my hair and feel multiple strands coming out of my head but if I do it now I don’t lose as many hairs. And after about only eight times of using this scalp treatment, my hair feels great and looks healthier. I think part of the reason is feels thicker is because the rate of loss has decreased. Surprisingly, my kids have even commented. They say it looks like I have more hair and they cannot see my scalp like before. They also said my hair looks darker. I’m so glad I came across this home remedy! It’s natural, cheap and seems to work. ( Since I do keep it on overnight, sometimes I can smell the onion if I perspire the next day. But, like I said, I can deal with the smell if I can get my hair back.) I’m going to try using red onions this month. I hope it works for all of you out there.

    Thanks Lori for the article.

Describing my hair loss. I started to see my scalp especially if there is a light over my head, and it is noticeable. Thinning hair on the side of the hair and also the middle, so I always keep my hair little long on the top but it shows that I have less hair and looks so ugly with a long hair”2inches”
I decided to shave my head, so I did. it looked a great like a military man, but I was afraid the thin hair won’t grow back. my friends suggested to shave it so it will be easy to apply castor oil on it. So, one night, I shaved my own hair to 3 mm, and to my surprise, I didn’t look bold at all lol, instead my head looked well and since then, I started using Black Jamaican castor oil and also Virgin hair fertilizer which is very cheap to buy a Dollar store which cost me only few backs. So I started seeing good results, and 2 weeks ago, I started using ONIONS every night, just rubbing a piece of it to my scalp, and I also use GARLIC twice a week bc of the strong odor. Results? I can’t be happier than ever. I started to see thickening of my thing hair, and I also see in the front and sides new follicle growing back, lots of them. I shave my hair on the sides, and let the top to 3 mm at the most which helped me a lot of using this products.
My scalp doesn’t itch, no side affects since I love onions and garlic in food anyways.

Lori, thanks a lot for your article, and I will also suggest to people visiting this site to do some research to enforce what Lori posted here. There are lots of people using ONIONS and GARLIC for hair loss. Go to youtube, and research onions and garlic for hair loss, and also CASTOR OIL, I use black Jamaican which I bought from dollar store also for few backs and it lasts for a month.

Results are very positive in my case, so don’t get discouraged by few anonymous people that didn’t work for. Hair doctors and dermatologists won’t suggest to us to use onions on your hair so they can be out of business lol. Good luck to you all.

Sorry to hear that, one person in my family was sensitive to it as well and had to stop using it for awhile.

Hi, the study linked above showed very good results. I’ve also tried it, and within a few weeks I noticed a significant improvement in hair loss. Many others who have commented above have had good results as well. 🙂

    HI.. Mun
    thanx for ur suggetion.
Actaully I am having thin Hairs and density of hair has been decreased on top and forhead area. AS you have already suggested that onion juice to apply on bald spot only.
Then what should I do to increase my hair density. Is there any home remedy to increase hair density that i have lost due to hard water , Now i have avoided hard water and using mineral water. Kindly suggest.
    Thanx in anticipation..
I also request LORI to suggest me plzz..

On bald spot only. And work on that area.
Take a snapshot of your bald area and within 2 or 3 months take another and check for progress.
      Wish you the best… hair.

but as you has advised onion juice is for only bald spot, then what should I do to increase my hair density that I have lost due to hard water.
