Hairspray is completely necessary if I ever want to keep my hair in one place and not look completely flat. Unfortunately, hairspray is not always great for your hair, body, or the environment. Many hair spray products contain harmful chemicals, alcohol, and artificial fragrances. These ingredients can damage your hair by making it dry and brittle. I’ve tried so many brands of hairspray and none of them were a perfect match for my hair. After a little digging around, I came across a simple and easy recipe for a natural DIY hairspray.
Ingredients in this Natural DIY Hairspray
This is a great natural DIY hairspray recipe because you can customize it depending what your hair needs. If you need a stronger hold, simply add more sugar. I like to add in lavender essential oil because it smells great and it is great for your hair. Lavender oil can promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
Rosemary essential oil is another great addition to this natural DIY hairspray. I add in rosemary because it stimulates your hair follicles which will help it grown healthy and strong. Your scalp will also benefit from using rosemary oil in the natural DIY hairspray. Rosemary has been shown to reduce scalp irritation and dandruff. Some studies even suggest that rosemary oil can slow down the graying of hair!
How Well Does it Work:
I actually stopped using hairspray for the past few years until I started making this natural diy hairspray. It is so nice to use hairspray again that holds really well! I use this natural DIY hairspray to give my hair more volume. I spray it on during and after blow-drying my hair and it really makes my hair look twice as thick. The hairspray really holds up well. It also works great for holding curls too.
If you compare to the super strength commercial hairsprays, it isn’t quite as strong. But, it is comparable to most hairspray brands in terms of strong it holds and how long it lasts. If you need the hairspray to be stronger, you can add more sugar to the recipe. The sugar in the recipe is what gives it, it’s strong hold.
What You Need:
- 1 cup of filtered water
- 4 teaspoons of sugar
- 2 drops of lavender essential oil
- 2 drops of rosemary essential oil
- Spray bottle
- Small saucepan
Instructions:
1. Boil the filtered water in the saucepan.
2. Add sugar and stir until it is all dissolved.
3. Let it cool.
4. Add essential oils of your choosing.
5. Transfer the mixture into the spray bottle.
6. Store in the refrigerator after each use.
Important to Note:
If you prefer not to use essential oils, this natural DIY hair spray recipe still works great without them. You can also add other essential oils of your choosing.

Hi Lori, thanks for sharing this with us and the most important thing is, this is not just a hair spray because you have used practically and gained the benefits. I believe this will not expire because we store in the refrigerator after each use. I mean at least we can use this a month continuously? (normally, we can keep oil for a long time period )
Lori Ryman
Great idea to store it in the refrigerator to help it last longer.

This may be a silly question, but does the sugar or sweet smell from the orange version attract bees or other insects when you are outside? I would love to try either of these for me and my daughter. She has super fine hair and if I don’t use hair spray her hair won’t even stay in a pony.
Yoli
Hello Kim, nope the orange version does not attract any bees or other insects. Good luck! I’m sure you will love it.

Interesting. I am guessing the sugar keeps all the essentials evenly mixed. But why keep it in the refrigerator?
Lori
Just to help preserve it. If you make a small batch or use it up quickly, you don’t have to keep it in the refrigerator.

yoli
I guessing because there is no preservatives in this hair spray. I add Vodka to mine and it has lasted for several months out on my counter. i use oranges to make mine though.
Kelly
Yoli, how do you make yours? The sugar leaving behind a white residue would be a concern for me too, as I have dark hair.
Yoli
Hi Kelly, you take one orange, cut it up and place it in a pot of water just till the orange pieces are covered. Then you boil lightly till about half of the water is left. Then you strain it through a fine mesh strainer. Put it in a spray bottle and add about a Tablespoon of Vodka to it. This will preserves it, so you can leave it out on the counter. It lasts till its gone!!! Good luck!! You can also add some essential oils like Rosemary or Lavender oil.
Lori
Since there is water in it and no preservatives, the refrigerator should help it last longer.

I make this too!! I use peppermint oil just because I like the scent and been using this for 5 years now and I never buy hairspray!
Lori
That’s great! I’ll have to try it with peppermint.

I make my hairspray with oranges. I have tried the sugar hairspray but I really forgot why I switched. Maybe it left white stuff when you comb your hair out??
Lori
How do you like the one with oranges? I’ve never tired that recipe before. It doesn’t leave any white stuff in my hair. I have medium brown hair.
