Lip scrubs have become super popular recently and I was dying to get my hands on one! After doing a little research I found out that it is just as easy to make your own at home than it is to go out and buy one. You only need four ingredients to make your own DIY sugar lip scrub. This lip scrub will moisturize and make your lips feel baby soft.
Making your own DIY sugar lip scrub protects you from putting harmful chemicals and dyes found in the store brand scrubs on your lips. Especially because they tend to taste so good, you just want to lick it off. Not to mention these same chemicals may irritate the sensitive skin on your lips and make them feel chapped or burned. Making a DIY sugar lip scrub at home is easier, cheaper, and safer than buying one.
Benefits of a DIY Sugar Lip Scrub
My lips have been super dry ever since I became pregnant. Now that I’m breastfeeding, they’re even more dry. That combined with decreased moisture in the air and the dry heat in my home has caused my lips to be extra dry. This DIY sugar lip scrub has made a great difference in the appearance of my lips.
This DIY sugar lip scrub helps remove dry skin from your lips and reveal a fresh layer. When you exfoliate your lips, it helps your lips to retain moister better too. This lip scrub will leave your lips soft, smooth and hydrated! Plus, they will look amazing! You won’t have to apply lip balm as often to keep your lips soft and smooth.
What the Ingredients Do
Coconut oil keeps your lips hydrated and healthy for longer. Coconut oil is rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants. The sugar is a natural exfoliator that takes the dead skin off of your lips. It also tastes good and completely safe if it is accidentally swallowed. Raspberry extract is for taste and smell if you, like myself, love fruity lip balms. The food coloring is just for fun and to add color to the DIY sugar lip scrub.
What You Will Need:
- 2 tablespoons of Coconut Oil
- 5 tablespoons of Granulated Sugar
- ¼ tablespoon of raspberry extract (optional depending on the recipe)
- 1 drop of red or pink food based food coloring
- Optional: Storage container with lid
How to make the DIY Sugar Lip Scrub
1.) Heat up the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds until it is liquefied.
2.) Add the sugar to the coconut oil and stir together.
3.) Add in the Raspberry extract.
4.) Add in the food coloring.
5.) Stir until everything is evenly mixed together and distributed.
6.) Use it! Just place a fingertip amount onto your lips and rub your lips together for a few seconds.
7.) Then wipe the excess scrub off. No worries if you accidentally swallow some, all the ingredients are safe to ingest.
8.) Place in storage container in a room temperature area!
Other Variations of the DIY Sugar Lip Scrub
The great thing about this all natural sugar DIY lip scrub is that you can change up the flavors! If you prefer a minty lip scrub, you can switch the raspberry extract for mint and the red food coloring for blue. The mint extract leaves your lips feeling soothed. Here are the other DIY sugar lip scrub flavors that I’ve tried and loved!
(Remember to replace the raspberry extract and red food coloring with the ingredients below)
Sharp Mint
- Mint extract and organic green food coloring
Tangerine
- Orange extract and organic orange (or red or yellow) food coloring
Banana Cabana
- Banana extract and organic yellow food coloring
Cinnamon Spice
- Cinnamon extract and organic red and green food coloring (to make brown)
Vanilla Bean
- Vanilla extract and organic yellow food coloring
There are hundreds of other combinations that you can put together depending on what flavors and colors you enjoy. This DIY sugar lip scrub is completely customizable, it’s always fun trying to think of new and different flavors to try out.

Hi Lori,
A great website you’ve got I must say. Can you use peppermint essential oil in place of the mint extract? If so, how many drops will you recommend?
Many thanks!
Lori
Yes, you can use that instead. Just a few drops should work.

Hi Lori,
Is there some way I can make lip scrubs last longer than a few weeks.
I am making( natural products) Christmas hampers for the office staff. I have to make over 100 hampers and don’t want to leave it until the last minute. Can you offer some advice?
Thank-you.
Bev
Lori
You can add some natural ingredients that act as preservatives.

Whats the difference between adding Sugar or “harmful Chemicals” to the lip scrub. They are both dangerous and I’m sure with either lip scrub people will be licking their lips!
Lori
At least sugar is edible 🙂 I feel more comfortable using something edible, rather than chemicals that cannot be ingested.
