Improve Your Health with the Benefits of Lemon Water

If there is one thing that I can’t go a day without, it’s a glass of lemon water in the morning.

Drinking a glass of lemon water every morning is a simple and effective way to improve your health in many ways.

This citrus fruit contains a high amount of vitamin C to boost your immune system and prevent colds and the flu. Lemons are also a great source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These minerals provide your body with essential electrolytes for optimal health.

How and When to Drink it

To get all of the benefits of lemon water, it is best to use a glass of lukewarm water. After you have your glass of water, slice an organic lemon in half and squeeze both halves over the cup of water. You can also do this with a lime to get similar benefits. Every part of lemon is beneficial for health, so don’t be afraid to eat pieces of the membranous portions of the lemon and the peel! The peel contains 5 to 10 times more vitamin C than the juice. I usually scrap small pieces of the membranous portion of lemon into my cup of lemon water.

You should drink lemon water first thing in the morning upon waking and wait at least 15 to 30 minutes before having breakfast in order to get the most benefits of lemon water.

10 Health Benefits of Lemon Water:

1. Boosts Your Immune System– Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, citrus bioflavonoids, and phytonutrients, all of which aid in increasing your immune system.

2. Prevents Cancer – Lemons are a highly alkaline food, studies have shown that cancer thrives in an acidic body and cannot survive in an alkaline environment.

3. Increased Energy– The vitamins and nutrients in lemons help to increase your energy, particularly the high amount of vitamin C. Many note to feel energized and hydrated after drinking lemon water upon waking.

4. Improved Digestion– Lemon water stimulates the gastrointestinal tract which is why it is most beneficial to drink first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

5. Balances pH – Drinking a glass of lemon water helps to alkalize your body. Many diseases and conditions have been linked to an acidic body state. For optimal health it is important for your body to maintain a slightly alkaline state which can be achieved by eating alkaline foods.

6. Lower Blood Pressure – Drinking a glass of lemon or lime water can help lower blood pressure

7. Improved Liver Function – Lemon water aids in stimulating and purifying your liver. It also helps inhibit the excess flow of bile and increases liver enzymes.

8. Reduces Oxidative Stress – The vitamins and minerals in lemon water aid in reducing oxidative stress. Lemons contain antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and phytonutrients.

9. Detoxification– Lemon water benefits cleansing your body by reducing toxins in the blood. The nutrients in lemons also promote the removal of waste materials and toxins as it acts as a natural diuretic.

10. Regulates Bowel Movements – Lemon water helps the bowels to better eliminate waste and reduce constipation.

With all of these benefits of lemon water, be sure to switch out your morning coffee for a glass of warm lemon water!

It’s the same as with all other veggies/fruit, the nutrients are most potent when raw.

You could try having the lemon water with a meal. It may be easier to digest that way.

I use to add lemon juice and a little honey to my green tea in the morning. Then a little bit of lemon to my home made Zobo drink.

Lori, i was amazed after reading this post and oil pulling as well!
As a breakfast i drink a green smoothie, can you help to introduce this 2 practices (oil pulling and hot water with lemon) in my morning?
    What should i do/drink first?
    Thanks!!!

That’s a great question. I usually drink a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning, have breakfast, and then do oil pulling. Some prefer to do the oil pulling fist thing to prevent nausea, but I have never experienced it myself. So, I would probably have the lemon water, then smoothie, then do the oil pulling. 🙂

I like to add a teaspoon of honey to my warm lemon water in the morning. A little sweeter and easier to drink. Works well in revving up the digestive system!

So glad you’ve found it helpful! Another great way I like to start out the morning is to have a glass of tea with added coconut oil, it’s also a great immune booster and the healthy fats provide energy.

Wow… I really like lemon, the taste, the aroma, the color and the shape, it’s good to know it has many health benefit :D. It’s just that lemon price is quite high in my region, so I tried to make an optimal use of it. First thing in the morning, I drink it’s juice, then I put the peels into my drinking water jug to be consumed for a day, in the afternoon I put the peel into my bath water so I can have a daily lemon bath hehe..

I’ve been doing this for a few years now, first thing in the morning, & I feel my digestive system benefits. But I’ve had dentists rail about it – apparently the acid in the lemon is not good for your teeth. I now try to compromise by at least rinsing my mouth (and teeth) after drinking the lemon water. At one point I even went as far as making up a bicarb solution & swilling with it (bicarb is slightly alkaline). I can’t quite give up drinking the lemon water – it definitely does tone up my system! But teeth are important too…

Does the organic lemon juice that come in those lemon containers have the same benefit?

It would be best to use fresh fruit, the lemon containers may be sitting on a store shelf for months and months, decreasing the nutrients. Also, many of the lemon juice bottles are made from plastic, which brings into question the possibility of plastic leaching into the juice.

Had skin cancer surgery in April and also had about 20 precancerous lesions burned off my face and arms. also had a biopsy on one suspicious one on my forehead the doctor had the biopsy done twice to make sure it was not cancer. He said it was precancerous and he would have to burn it off at my next appointment. I heard about lemon water preventing cancer and thought what have I got to lose so i began taking it every morning. in e few weeks the lesion had disappeared. I have not gone back t the doctor yet but I usually have several precancerous lesions that have to burned off by now and I have none. Did the lemon water prevent them from coming back. I don’t know but I have no other explanation

For the most benefits, it is best to use fresh fruit. With the bottled juice, it may be sitting on a store shelf for many months and also depending on what type of container it’s in, could plastic be leaching into it?
