It seems like everyone is into coconut oil because of its fantastic health benefits, but many people don’t know about the delicious treat, coconut butter.
It’s a creamy frosting that’s a great alternative to butter. But be careful! Because once you get into it, there’s no stopping you. When I first tried it, I got hooked immediately and now for a real treat I reward myself with muffins, banana bread or fruit topped with this healthy frosting.
What is Coconut Butter?
Coconut butter is made from whole coconut meat that is ground into a creamy butter. What’s the difference between coconut butter and coconut oil? Coconut oil is the oil extracted from the meat of the coconut. The meat is the flesh of the coconut, the white part that you scrape out of the inside of the coconut.
Health Properties of Coconut Butter
Coconut meat contains medium chain fatty acids which are easily digested and used for energy. Many people today believe that saturated fats are bad; however, healthy fats are vital for health.
Our body needs fats for: brain cells and nerve function, energy, cell growth and function of vital organs. Additionally, fats aide in balancing blood sugar and regulating hormones.
Coconut meat is an excellent source of fiber and manganese. Fiber is beneficial in aiding in the digestive process. Manganese aides in metabolizing fat and protein and supports the immune system. It also is beneficial for optimal functioning of the thyroid.
Additional Benefits of Coconut Butter:
- Immunity Booster- Rich in lauric acid.
- Aids in killing bacteria and viruses due to coconut butter’s antiviral properties.
- Promotes calcium absorption.
- Skin moisturizer, improves skin elasticity, helps smooth wrinkles and reduces blemishes.
- Coconut helps stimulate the metabolism.
How to Make Coconut Butter:
You can buy coconut butter at your local health food store or online (see my favorite brand). Or you can easily make coconut butter at home in a blender.
Here’s How to Do It:
What you need:
You only need one ingredient to make coconut butter!
- Unsweetened dried coconut flakes or shredded (get full fat, not reduced fat) – (see it here)
- A blender or food processor
Instructions to Make Coconut Butter:
1) Put about 4 to 5 cups of coconut flakes into your blender/food processor. You can use more, but if you use less it is harder to get a smooth consistency.
2) Blend for about 10 to 15 minutes, pausing several times in between to scrape the sides with a spatula or spoon.
3) Once you get a creamy consistency you can scoop out the coconut butter and store it in a jar with a lid.
*It doesn’t need to be refrigerated; I leave mine on the kitchen counter.
*This makes 1 to 2 cups of coconut butter.
The temperature of your room can change the consistency of the coconut butter. In warmer temperatures it can be more liquidy and in colder temperatures the coconut butter becomes harder (similar to what happens to coconut oil).
You can place the jar of coconut butter in a slightly warmed oven or in a bowl of cool water to change the consistency.
3 Ways to Use Coconut Butter
1) Spread some coconut butter on a slice of bread or muffins, or any baked goods. I love putting it on my coconut flour blueberry muffins for snack (pictured above). It tastes like frosting!
Get the recipe here, for the muffins pictured above.
2) Drizzle it over fruit.
3) It’s the perfect exfoliator for your skin! It is gentle, yet effective!! I just discovered this and love it!

Can I use a fresh cocoanut?

You can use a fresh coconut, but I’ve only tried making coconut butter with the flakes.

Can you explain how to use it on your face & body? Do you rub it in and leave it on or do you just leave it on for a little while and wash it off? If you leave it on, can you wear makeup over it?
Lori, Health Extremist
I rub it on as an exfoliator and then just rinse of with water. It is great because it exfoliates but is still pretty gentle, it’s good for those with sensitive skin.

When using fresh coconut, just blend it?
Cindy, did you succeed?
Vera
I found that you had to blend it with some coconut oil

No problem, keep up the good work on this site, it is going to take off.
I have been testing Serrapeptase for pain relief and find it very effective, I thought maybe some research and an article would be excellent. I get mine from Amazon for a reasonable price and have since stopped taking prednisone. Good stuff.
