The first time I tried a coconut oil hair mask was about 3 years ago and the results were so great that I’m still using one regularly every week. Just after one use, my hair was moisturized, softer, less frizzy, and shiny!
A coconut oil hair mask is one of the easiest hair masks to use because you really only need coconut oil. Sometimes I add raw honey in the mixture to get even more benefits.
Not only does this hair mask hydrate your hair and repair damage, but it can also promote hair growth and make your hair thicker!
I like that all you need for this mask is right in your kitchen and it’s also inexpensive. I usually try to buy quite a few jars of coconut oil whenever it is on sale because I use it for so many things from beauty products to cooking with it.
Benefits of Using a Coconut Oil Hair Mask
This hair mask is the ultimate deep conditioning treatment. It moisturizes your scalp and hair. If you have any dry skin or dandruff, it will be gone after just one use and the results last about a week (for me).
Coconut oil is full of nutrients such as lauric acid, fatty acids, and vitamin E, which help repair hair damage and increase volume.
A recent study found that when coconut oil was applied to hair before and after it was washed this prevented protein loss from hair.
This hair mask will make your hair stronger, prevent hair from breaking, and can even promote hair growth.
How to Make a Coconut Oil Hair Mask:
Ingredients You Need:
- 2 to 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon raw honey (optional)
Directions:
1. Mix the two ingredients in a dish.
2. Use your fingers to apply the mixture to damp hair and massage it in.
3. Leave on for 10 to 30 minutes. I put my hair up in a bun while my hair and scalp absorb the coconut oil.
4. Wash your hair to remove the coconut oil hair mask. I use castile soap to wash it out of my hair.
How to Remove Coconut Oil from Hair
Coconut oil makes a fantastic hair mask because it saturates the hair and scalp so well. The one downside to this is it can sometimes be hard to get out. To remove the hair mask, I wash my hair with castile soap. If any coconut oil is remaining, I apply some baking soda to my hair, rub it in and rinse out with water. This always removes any excess oil for me.
How Often Should You Apply the Coconut Oil Hair Mask
I use this coconut hair mask about every week. The results are pretty long lasting. During the winter when my scalp was drier, I made sure not to miss a week because when I did, I noticed a difference.
Have you tried a coconut oil hair mask?

I worry about washing it out and the coconut oil going down the drain and into my septic. Will it clog my drains and mess with the septic system? When oil pulling…I spit into a tissue for that reason.
Lori
I was initially concerned about that too. I don’t think it’s too bad because I wash the coconut oil out with shampoo so it’s not going down the drain alone. I haven’t had an issue so far..I’ve been using it for a few years now.

For a while now, I have been oiling my hair with coconut oil before washing it every Sunday. What I do is that I heat it up a little so that it’s warm. Then I apply it along the length of my hair and simply massage my scalp. I leave it on for around 2 hours and then wash it.
I’ll try it as a hair mask now 🙂
Lori
That sounds great! It’s really moisturizing.

Thanks for the great tips. I like to keep really good care of my hair. I do not want to lose it, so I am always looking for ways to treat it. I love using coconut oil. I am going to try this recipe out for it. I do however have the hardest time washing it out. I really like the tip about the baking soda. I will have to give that a try.
